Advice on How to Register as an Independent Candidate

In Namibia’s dynamic democracy, people who are not members of any political party can run as independent candidates in a variety of elections. It’s only been possible to register as an independent candidate in Namibia for two distinct elections. This inclusion makes sure that people from all backgrounds are welcome to speak and be represented in politics, rather than just party politics.

In case you’re thinking of standing as an independent in Namibia, this detailed guide will assist you with the registration procedure.

Understanding the Electoral Framework

Understanding the electoral environment in which independent candidates function is essential before beginning the registration procedure. Namibia conducts both municipal and national elections for governance.

During Namibia’s general elections, independent candidates unaffiliated with political parties were consistently permitted to run for president and local government positions. Party Lists hold the seats in the National Assembly; the voter does not directly elect them.

Eligibility Criteria

To register as an independent candidate, you need to fulfill the requirements listed below:

Process of Registering as an
Independent Candidate in Namibia

Thumb 01

Verify Your Registration as a Voter

Make sure your name appears on the voter registration list for the area in which you plan to run. Check the status of your registration with the Namibian Electoral Commission (ECN).

Thumb 02

Obtain Forms for Nomination

Nomination forms are available for download on the (ECN) website or can be picked up in person at the regional (ECN) offices. These papers will ask for personal information, a statement of candidacy, and, in some situations, a nomination from a predetermined percentage of the constituency's registered voters.

Thumb 03

Gunner Support

Independent candidates for presidential and local government positions are required to collect signatures from all registered voters in the ward in which they plan to run.

Thumb 04

Make the Deposit Payment

Your nomination may not be complete without a deposit. If you receive a particular proportion of the vote, this deposit is refunded. Depending on the level of government you are running for, the sum changes.

Thumb 05

Send in your nomination paperwork

By the deadline, send the completed nomination forms to the ECN, together with the deposit and any necessary supporting documentation. Please do not submit work after the deadline.

Thumb 06

Launch a Campaign

You can launch your campaign as soon as your nomination is approved. To guarantee justice and compliance with the law, the ECN offers standards for campaign behavior.

Adherence to ECN Regulation and Campaigning

It is crucial to follow election laws and regulations. This covers the Electoral Code of Conduct and the laws governing campaign money. Like party candidates, independents must register as candidates in Namibia and conduct their campaigns in a way that upholds the rights of others and encourages a free and fair election.
